Vitamin A, Eh!
Vitamin A has long been known for keeping skin healthy, maintaining bone growth and improving night vision. This is obviously important to drive safely and perhaps avoid stepping on that piece of Lego on the floor at night! More recently, Vitamin A has been discovered to be essential for us for heart health, tissue repair and immune defence. The immune defence action occurs in our gut microbiome. If you are curious for more information, contact the TLC’s Registered Dietitian, Cheryl Nickurak.
Altogether, Vitamin A is working for us on defence and offence.
Where does Vitamin A come from?
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin from foods and is stored in our liver. The types are retinoic acid or retinol from animal sources, and in the plant form, it is from a phytonutrient called beta-carotene.

Am I getting enough Vitamin A?
Eat a serving of deep leafy green or orange vegetables or fruit daily. A half plate of vegetables and fruit at least 2 of 3 meals a day is recommended by Health Canada. Enjoy animal sources such as eggs and milk.
Should I take Vitamin A supplements? No! You can easily become toxic on Vitamin A. Get nutrients from foods first. Any vitamins beyond what is in a general multivitamin for kids or adults may risk toxicity.
